Local attractions
Even if you're not much of a train buff, it's worth taking a trip on the Ffestiniog Railway – the steam-powered services take in some of Snowdonia's most spectacular scenery as they wend their way down to the coast at Porthmadog. If you've got an appetite for more, connect here for the Welsh Highland Railway all the way up to Caernarfon.
If you'd like to explore under your own steam, there are heaps of hikes in the surrounding Snowdonia National Park – Snowdon itself is just a few miles away, or you may prefer a quieter clamber up Crimpiau from Capel Curig or a circuit of Llyn Idwal from Ogwen Cottage for something a bit less leg-busting (both routes about half an hour's drive). The site is also a few minutes' amble from the Antur Stiniog mountain bike trails, with an uplift service that's been tipped as the country's best.
Not enough adrenaline yet? The site is also a 10-minute stroll from Titan ZipWorld (to fly along two kilometres of zipline) and the underground adventure park in an old slate cavern at Bounce Below.
Calm that heart rate a little by heading coastwards for a trip to pretty Portmeirion or a wander around the castle and beach in Harlech – both are about half an hour away by car.
